GuestReflection is worth using deliberately in a small space. A pond’s surface can visually double the planting and sky around it, making a compact garden feel more open than its actual dimensions suggest, provided the water is kept reasonably clear and the surrounding planting is not so tall it blocks the reflection from most seating positions.

Root systems from established trees deserve the same caution. Digging close to a mature tree’s root zone can damage the tree and complicate the pond’s construction, so a position with reasonable clearance from significant trees tends to save problems later, on both fronts.
Zoning within the space is worth thinking through before any hard landscaping goes in. A quieter seating area for reading or a morning coffee, set slightly apart from a dining and entertaining zone nearer the pond, lets the same garden work for both a quiet Tuesday evening and a Saturday gathering, without either use compromising the other.
Summer is the season most designs are built around, water lilies in flower, planting at full height, the pond used for swimming or sitting beside in the evenings. It is worth remembering this is only a third of the year, though, and a garden that peaks only in summer is missing two thirds of its potential.
Height and structure matter more than most people expect. Taller planting set back from the pond, rather than crowding the immediate edge, protects the view of the water from the house and from seating areas, while still giving the border presence. Ornamental grasses, taller perennials, and small multi-stem trees set a few metres back all do this well without shading the water more than a pond generally wants.
